Abstract

The integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into Microgrid introduces many power quality issues in the system due to the inherent intermittent characteristics of RES systems. This paper gives a review of Power Quality Improvement (PQI) strategies used in RES integrated microgrids operating in both grid-integrated and independent modes. Even though conventional approaches of PQI provide fundamental power quality support, they fail to operate in dynamic conditions due to limited responsiveness. Advanced custom power devices such as FACTS and filters give real time voltage regulation and efficient harmonic compensation. Filters effectively mitigate harmonics produced by power electronic converters. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) helps microgrids to enhance voltage and frequency stability, especially in islanded operation. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) integrate energy storage systems with complementary characteristics to improve dynamic performance and power quality in the system. The coordinated implementation of these PQ solutions ensures a stable, resilient, and high-quality power in a renewable energy source microgrid. The findings were supported by simulating an HESS supported DVR for power quality improvement in a grid.
