Flexible Load Management in Virtual Power Plants: Research Advances, Challenges, and Outlooks
Abstract
With the growing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES), intermittency and uncertainty are introduced that challenge grid stability and market operations. Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) have emerged as a scalable solution by aggregating distributed energy resources and flexible loads under intelligent coordination, this paper presents a comprehensive review of Flexible Load Management (FLM) strategies within VPPs, focusing on three major resources: Electric Vehicles (EVs), Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS), and Cryptocurrency Mining loads. Unlike existing surveys this study systematically maps these flexible loads to the core VPP challenges of uncertainty mitigation, coordination of heterogeneous assets, and market participation. Through comparative analysis of different control frameworks used, it highlights how bidirectional EV charging, hybrid storage coupling, and programmable crypto-mining demand can jointly enhance operational flexibility and renewable utilization, also, the review identifies integration barriers ranging from regulatory gaps to interoperability and computational scalability and outlines solution pathways involving AI-assisted scheduling, federated learning, and dynamic market pricing. The paper concludes that an integrated FLM architecture leveraging these flexible assets can significantly improve VPP resilience, economic efficiency, and environmental sustainability, paving the way for adaptive, low-carbon power systems.
