Multimedia over Satellite with QUIC-Wave: An Experimental Evaluation of Performance
Abstract
QUIC is emerging as the de facto transport protocol for modern applications and forms the basis of HTTP/3. Within the European Space Agency (ESA) project QUICoS, we developed QUIC-Wave, a satellite-tailored extension of QUIC designed to address the limitations of TCP-based transport in high-latency and lossy satellite environments (GEO, MEO, LEO). Unlike Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) approaches, QUIC-Wave preserves end-to-end semantics and encryption while enhancing congestion control. The protocol extensions are engineered to sustain throughput and responsiveness under satellite-specific conditions such as long RTTs, bandwidth variability, and mobility-induced handovers, while maintaining compliance with QUIC specifications and interoperability with terrestrial networks. To validate QUIC-Wave, we conducted extensive real experiments using standard browsers and servers. Results show that QUIC-Wave supports interactive web browsing and multimedia streaming with improved performance over satellite links, without compromising either end-to-end encryption or protocol integrity.
