Optimized PV Converter Fed HAPF for Improved Power Quality
Abstract
This paper proposes an advanced control approach for improving power quality in electrical distribution systems using a photovoltaic-fed hybrid active power filter (HAPF-PV). The method effectively suppresses harmonic distortion, facilitates reactive power compensation, and enhances power factor. The HAPF is energized by a photovoltaic system integrated with a high-gain I-Luo DC-DC converter, which significantly improves voltage boosting performance and ensures efficient power transfer even under fluctuating irradiance levels. To maximize energy extraction from the PV system, a Class Topper Optimization (CTO)-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is employed. A Decoupled Neural Network (DNN)-based controller is adopted to generate the reference compensation current by dynamically adapting to changes in nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions. The generated reference signal is processed through a hysteresis current controller to generate appropriate gate switching signals for the interfaced power converter. This enables precise harmonic mitigation under dynamic operating scenarios. The proposed technique ensures sustainable integration of renewable energy while simultaneously enhancing system stability and power quality. The efficacy of the control scheme is validated through MATLAB simulations conducted under nonlinear loads. The results prove notable improvements in energy conversion efficiency, harmonic suppression, and overall system performance.
