Abstract

This paper presents a mode-switch-less phase-flipping series-resonance VCO using dual magnetic-electric coupling paths. It enables continuous control of the tank coupling coefficient from positive to negative, allowing wideband differential and common-mode operations within a single core. A nested transformer provides an optimal inductance ratio and coupling coefficient. Fabricated in 40nm CMOS, the prototype achieves a 30.2% tuning range (7.6-10.3GHz) and -151.3dBc/Hz phase noise at 10MHz offset, yielding a 208.3-dBc/Hz FoMTA.
