Experimental study of Li-ion Batteries Performance Under Real-time Dynamic Load
Abstract
The lifecycle of batteries is greatly affected by the loading conditions in real-world applications. Previous experimental studies, focusing on simplified idealized lab conditions (steady-state constant current, constant voltage (CCCV) profiles) could be potentially misleading, obscuring important information about dynamic conditions. Our work aims to overcome the limitations of idealized studies using a Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) system. Our developed PHIL model integrates real and simulated components in a controlled environment, while being able to perform real dynamic charge and discharge cycling tests of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). We assess the performance of LIBs by subjecting a Lithium Cobalt Oxide (ICR) cell to an EV drive cycle test while monitoring changes in capacity, resistance, and electrochemical properties. Our analysis determines the effects of real-world dynamic loads on degradation rates such that we can eventually develop more durable systems and system controls.
