Abstract

Recent studies show that unexpected movement of smart vehicles in stationary position poses a significant safety concern as a result of adversaries gaining control from unauthorised access of the smart vehicle braking system, resulting in life-threatening risks and damage. In this paper, we propose ASAVA, an autonomous safety and security validation protocol, which uses a symmetric key to prevent unauthorised read access and manipulation of sensor data in smart vehicles, as well as static numbers to protect smart vehicles from rolling. The data used by ASAVA are collected from various components of smart vehicles such as the Gear Sensor (GS) and Rotation Per Minute (RPM) Sensor for safety and security measurements. ASAVA uses sensor-based brake control to adjust brake pressure and engage the Antilock Brake System (ABS). ASAVA security analysis shows that adversaries cannot gain access to the data collected and transmitted using ASAVA, ensuring the confidentiality of the data in smart vehicles. ASAVA safety analysis was performed and the results demonstrated that ASAVA-equipped smart vehicles are safer compared to existing related solutions.
