Abstract

This work addresses the synchronized control of a solar photovoltaic array (SPVA) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) connected to the utility grid through a voltagesource converter (VSC). A Synchronous Reference-Frame Phase-Locked Loop (SRF-PLL) theory is utilized to track the utility grid frequency and phase with high accuracy, which helps the converter remain synchronized and sustain a stable reference voltage even when grid conditions violate. The control scheme manages the flow of energy among the SPVA, BESS, and utility grid, reducing current harmonics and ensuring that the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) stays almost sinusoidal. When energy generation from SPVA ceases, the BESS discharges energy to meet the load demands, whereas surplus energy is fed back to the utility to maintain a stable and smooth connection. MATLAB/Simulink environment showing that the proposed scheme responses quickly to transients and is tolerant against utility disturbances and demonstrates total harmonic distortion (THD) remains below the 5% threshold defined in IEEE-519 standards.
