Abstract

In order to reduce energy waste and to create operational efficiencies throughout modern urban areas, we must begin moving towards developing Intelligent infrastructure. The following article establishes a comprehensive Internet Of Things (IoT) linked development for the real time monitoring of the fault location for Municipal Streetlight Networks. The IoT platform comprises of a Microchip ATmega328p as a hardware gateway capturing the electrical current and ambient luminosity with specialist sensors and sending the telemetry as JSON formatted data via firebase to a Cloud Database for the City administrators. A cloud-based Centralised Administrative interface created within the Flutter framework provides real time visualisation of the Municipal Streetlight Network Health. Empirical analysis of the prototype demonstrates a fault detection latency that is approximately$2-3$seconds$-97.5 \%$faster than traditional manual inspection methods. By developing a low latency notification architecture, municipalities can greatly reduce the amount of time that faulted streetlights go out of service and reduce inefficient use of maintenance resources allowing Greater Degrees of Sustainable Smart City Management.
