An Efficient Wireless Power Transfer System for Electric Vehicles Supporting Sustainable Energy Goals
Abstract
This study presents the design and implementation of an efficient wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle (EV) charging using a single-coil resonant inductive coupling technique. The proposed system employs a circular planar transmitter-receiver coil pair integrated with an adaptive impedance matching network and a high-frequency inverter, eliminating the need for complex multi-coil structures. The design focuses on achieving high power transfer efficiency while maintaining tolerance to coil misalignment and compliance with electromagnetic compatibility standards. Experimental results demonstrate a maximum power transfer efficiency of up to 91% at a 15 cm air gap, with stable performance under lateral displacement. Owing to its simplicity, affordability, and scalability, the proposed WPT system is a promising solution for nextgeneration contactless EV charging, supporting the transition toward sustainable and user-friendly electric mobility. The proposed wireless power transfer system contributes directly to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by enabling efficient, contactless EV charging that supports clean energy utilization. It also aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the development of an innovative and scalable charging infrastructure, and supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by facilitating sustainable urban transportation and reducing reliance on conventional plug-in charging systems.
