Performance Analysis of Low RCS Structures Based on Dielectric Patterning for Radar Stealth Applications
Abstract
This paper proposes a low radar cross-section (RCS) metallic conductor plate using the dielectric loading technique for modern radar systems. The loading of the dielectric slabs with different patterns of appropriate thickness and other electrical properties leads to phase cancellation of the reflected EM wave, and hence, optimal RCS suppression of the target is achieved. The RCS reduction performance is analyzed for a$90 \text{mm} \times 90 \text{mm}$conductor plate operating at X and Ku bands with hybrid, stepped hybrid, and checkerboard loading configurations. Rigorous parametric studies are carried out to examine the RCS suppression behaviour of a metallic target. The results show wide band RCS reduction in the range 7.68-18.92 GHz and 7.5-16.5 GHz for the hybrid and stepped hybrid loading structures, respectively. Peak RCS reduction of more than −23 dB has been achieved under normal incidence. For the oblique incidence, the angular stability up to 60° is observed for both TE and TM mode polarizations. The presented design's simple and planar configuration, reduced height, and ease of fabrication are the attractive features that may make it suitable for stealth applications in advanced radar systems.
