Abstract

Biomedical engineering has revolutionized healthcare of today by bringing advanced technology with medical science. This emerging field designs new and novel tools and systems that advance disease detection, monitoring, and clinical intervention all while maintaining safety and comfort for patients. Medical interventions can broadly be characterized as invasive or noninvasive based on how they enter the body. Invasive interventions include, but are not limited to, surgeries, catheterization, and implantable devices. Invasive intervention types may provide accurate information and targeted treatment but also can be the most dangerous intervention type. Noninvasive interventions include MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, and wearable sensors which provide crucial information safely and comfortably. CGM technology is an example of a non-invasive option where continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) supports safe monitoring, early diagnosis, and telemedicine. Because of recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and signal processing, increased precision has been made possible in both invasive and non-invasive intervention types. Advancement in intelligent algorithms has also shortened the time required for the analysis of medical data. Finally, hybrid systems of intelligent algorithms are also becoming possible in certain situations taking advantage of features from both types of intervention. In summary, biomedical engineering is bringing healthcare to more precise, personalized, and patient- centered solutions based on the advancement of smart sensors, greater automation, and intelligent analysis of medical data.
