Enhancing Power System Efficiency through Passive Compensation
Abstract
Transmission losses occur in a power system when bulk power is transmitted form a generating station to the load centers with the help of high voltage transmission lines. The generating stations are situated far away from the load center because of many environmental reasons. The transmission losses in a line are proportional to the transmission distance. The easy and effective way to reduce transmission loss is by altering the impedance of the transmission line. Passive compensation can significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of power transmission systems. This study examines the effects of passive compensation on transmission losses and the overall economy of power system. By integrating passive compensators, transmission lines can maintain voltage stability, reduce reactive power flow, and minimize losses, thereby improving system efficiency. The economic advantages are substantial, as reduced losses translate into lower operating costs and delayed infrastructure investments. This paper discusses the effects of different passive compensation techniques on transmission losses and the proposed method is tested on 5 bus system.
