IoT-Driven Hydrological Risk Assessment and Alert Mechanism
Abstract
Flooding is a common and destructive natural disaster, with increasing frequency and severity due to climate change. Traditional flood management methods often rely on outdated technology, leading to delayed responses and compromised safety. To address these challenges, the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced innovative solutions, with Internet of Things (IoT) technology playing a key role. IOT is a specialized cellular communication technology designed for lowpower, wide-area applications, making it ideal for connecting sensors across remote areas. Its extended range and low power consumption enable the deployment of long-term water level sensors, even in areas with unreliable connectivity. An IOTbased flood detection and alert system offer real-time monitoring by continuously collecting and analyzing data from strategically placed sensors. When water levels exceed predefined thresholds, alerts are sent to communities and authorities through SMS, email, or app notifications, allowing timely evacuations and coordinated emergency responses. This system also collects historical data to improve the understanding of flood risk and inform future infrastructure planning, helping mitigate flood impacts. Using IOT, the system transforms flood management from reactive to proactive, enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience.
