Performance Evaluation of MVDR Adaptive Beamforming for Smart Antenna Systems in Next Generation Wireless Networks
Abstract
Smart antenna systems have become a critical technology for next-generation wireless communications due to their ability to enhance spectral efficiency, suppress interference, and improve signal quality. This paper investigates the application of the Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) beamforming algorithm in a smart antenna system and evaluates its performance through MATLAB simulations. Unlike conventional methods such as Delay-and-Sum or Bartlett beamforming, MVDR adaptively adjusts antenna weights to minimize output power while maintaining a distortionless response in the desired signal direction. The experimental results demonstrate that MVDR achieves higher directivity, sharper beam patterns, and significant interference suppression, thereby improving the signal-to-interference-plus- noise ratio (SINR). Simulation results confirm that the main lobe is accurately steered toward the target user while unwanted interference is effectively reduced. These improvements establish MVDR-based smart antenna systems as highly suitable for modern wireless standards, where demands for capacity, coverage, and reliability continue to increase. This study highlights the critical role of adaptive beamforming smart antennas in the advancement of$\mathbf{5 G}$and beyond communication networks.
