BlockSense: Blockchain-Integrated Secure Communication Infrastructure for IoT Sensor Networks
Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) networks have posed an immense security risk, such as concentration of vulnerabilities, scarcity of power, and real-time integrity of multi-sensory data. Standard blockchain deployments and traditional security systems do not usually maintain this balance between decentralization, scalability, and performance, restricting their usefulness in an IoT deployment. The current paper is an introduction to the BlockSense, a Blockchain-based Secure IoT Sensor Network Communication infrastructure created to overcome these drawbacks. BlockSense is based on lightweight blockchain, edge computing, and smart contracts to deliver auditable, tamper-proof and decentralized trust management between heterogeneous sensor nodes. None of the sensor traffic is sent through edge nodes since sensor transactions are preprocessed and verified before being recorded on a distributed ledger, and anomaly detection and access control are automated by smart contracts. Experimental analyses show that BlockSense is substantially faster and uses less energy than traditional centralized and blockchain-based architectures, has high rates of anomaly detection (>97 percent), and has consistently with high trust scores as the number of nodes grows. The framework provides secure multi-sensor communication without centralized authorities and provides a scalable, low-latency, and practical solution to an IoT network. BlockSense delivers a security multi-layered architecture which can easily be adopted in smart cities, industrial internet of things, and health environments. By strengthening secure, resilient, and scalable IoT communication infrastructure, BlockSense advances reliable and innovative digital systems essential for modern industrial and smart city applications
