Applying Behavioral Economics to Decentralized Application (dApp) Token Design
Abstract
Imagine creating a digital economy in which users are not merely reading the numbers but are intrinsically incentivized to engage since the system is aware of how they think and behave. This is the promise of combining behavioural economics and dApp token design. Classical models simulate users as idealized rational computers, but however, this idealization is contradicted by empirical evidence. We are influenced by the fear of missing out, the excitement of a bet, and by what is popular. This is the criticism that brings behavioural economics research to bear to show how such quirks of man can destroy or salvage token economies on blockchain networks. From a body of research conducted between 2018 and 2025, we point out cognitive bias, social connections, and innovative incentive rearrangements driving adoption and building ecosystems. For example, overconfidence can result in a 75% increase in holdings of crypto. Psychologically savvy developers can design tokens that are longer-lasting and promote a healthy community. We also point out where the study is incomplete and outline avenues for future research while seeking actionable knowledge for actual dApp developers.
