Machine Learning—Enabled Drone Surveillance for Railway Safety Using the YOLO Object Detection Model
Abstract
Railway networks are essential for effective freight and passenger transportation, serving as the foundation for the expansion of the world economy. The structural integrity of railroad tracks, which are susceptible to flaws including cracks, welding problems, and blockages, is essential to ensuring the safety and dependability of these systems. These anomalies offer substantial dangers, including derailments, service outages, and financial losses, necessitating proactive maintenance procedures. Despite being widely utilized, traditional manual inspection techniques are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to human error. Additionally, they are insufficient for monitoring large and remote railway networks where prompt intervention is essential because they do not offer real-time insights. The suggested method transforms track monitoring and maintenance by fusing advanced AI-powered analytics with autonomous drone technology to address these issues. The system uses drones with LiDAR sensors and high-resolution cameras to take precise aerial photos of railroad rails. Machine learning algorithms are used to interpret these visual and geographical data in order to accurately identify and categorize anomalies including cracks, misalignments, and vegetation encroachments. Defects may be quickly identified because to the system's strong data pipeline, which guarantees that raw sensor data is preprocessed and evaluated almost instantly. In order to enable preventive maintenance and minimize downtime, the project also makes use of predictive analytics to foresee possible issue areas based on historical data and environmental factors.
