Abstract

Cycling in groups offers physical and social benefits but also brings safety risks such as collisions, rider separation, potholes, and undetected falls. This paper presents a modular, real-time cyclist safety system that integrates collision avoidance, proximity monitoring, pothole detection, and fall detection using low-cost microcontrollers. The system employs ultrasonic sensors, inertial measurement units, Wi-Fi communication, and an onboard camera with an embedded machine-learning model. Structured indoor and outdoor testing showed that the system reliably detected safety-critical events with acceptable accuracy and latency. These results demonstrate the potential for an affordable, scalable solution to enhance safety in recreational and group cycling.
