Abstract

This paper introduces a multi-drive system-based integrated machine drive (IMD) with a three-level dual-output active neutral-point clamped (TLDO-ANPC) converter and rotor field-oriented control. It is designed for simultaneous and independent control of two distinct motor types: a three-phase induction motor (IM) and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Unlike conventional approaches that require separate voltage source converters for each motor, the proposed configuration enables independent control of torque, speed, and current for each motor using a single converter, eliminating the need for master-slave operation. A detailed theoretical analysis of the converter, including its design principles and operational characteristics, is presented. A rotor field-oriented control scheme is developed to achieve precise, independent motor control by regulating d-axis and q-axis currents. The effectiveness of the proposed system is validated through comprehensive simulation studies and experimental testing using a laboratory-scale prototype controlled by a dSPACE real-time platform. Results demonstrate stable operation, accurate speed and torque control, and effective dc-link voltage balancing under steady-state and dynamic conditions. Potential applications of the multi-drive system include all-wheel-drive (AWD) electric vehicles, industrial automation, renewable energy systems, HVAC systems, moreelectric aircraft (MEA), and marine propulsion.
