Abstract

In the Internet of Things (IoT) environments, a large number of resource-constrained devices rely on the Domain Name System (DNS) for resolving identifiers and enabling communication. However, traditional DNS was not designed to address the unique challenges of IoT, such as decentralized architecture, and increased vulnerability to attacks. These include domain squatting, domain generation algorithms (DGAs), distributed denial of service (DDoS) and cache poisoning. Therefore, IoT applications require a specialized DNS system that is secure, scalable and compatible with decentralized environments. To address these needs, we propose CABDNS, a secure, IoT-compatible blockchain-based DNS mechanism. Our security analysis shows that CAB-DNS is resilient to DGAs, domain squatting, front-running attacks and cache poisoning. Experimental results demonstrate that CAB-DNS can handle up to 5×102DNS queries per second while consuming fewer on-chain resources than the Ethereum Name System.
