Overview of Free-Space Laser Communications Technology State-of-the-Art: Challenges, Solutions, and Standards
Abstract
Since it was realized that laser light could be used to transmit large volumes of data over long distances through free space, researchers have proposed very many options for each of the required subsystems. In this report, we try to briefly survey the major approaches for many of these subsystems and then list how recent standards have selected options from this list.
