System of Systems Engineering Approach for Applying AI/ML to Decision Support

System of Systems (SoS) complexity is rapidly increasing in both commercial and military operational environments as they incorporate advanced and diverse emerging technologies. A key challenge for these SoS is how to make timely decisions as environmental conditions change. SoS Engineering (SoSE) can help address this challenge by incorporating automation to assist with decision support. One way to accomplish this is through the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML). This article identifies a SoSE approach in which fundamental SoSE principles are applied that incorporate AI/ML techniques for decision support. This SoSE approach is applied to three related use cases in order to demonstrate its effectiveness across a broad spectrum of operational scenarios.
