Polarization and Frequency Selective Surface-Based Wideband Transmit-Reflect-Array Antenna
Abstract
In this letter, a polarization-dependent, high-gain, wideband transmit-reflect-array (TRA) antenna is presented. The TRA consists of a polarization and frequency selective surface (PFSS) sandwiched between two 3D-printed phase shifting surfaces (PSSs). The PFSS has been designed to allowx-polarized waves to transmit andy-polarized waves to reflect in almost the entire Ka-band, while the PSS compensates for the spatial phase lead/lag on the TRA aperture. The TRA comprises 716 unit cells that are placed across a circular aperture. The measurement result shows a peak gain, peak aperture efficiency, 1-dB gain bandwidth (BW), and 3-dB gain BW of 28.6 dBi, 46.1%, 20.4%, and 35.2%, respectively, for the RA mode of operations while their corresponding values are 28.2 dBi, 40.9%, 16.2%, and 32.7% for the TA mode of operation. The designed TRA antenna exhibits wideband and stable radiation characteristics, which make it a suitable candidate for long-distance high-speed bi-directional communications.
