Abstract

To mitigate fatal collisions at non-line-of-sight (NLOS) blind curves, this paper presents the Blind Turn Accident Alert System (BTAAS), a low-cost, solar-powered Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) solution utilizing sub-GHz LoRa. The system uses intelligent nodes at curves to detect vehicles approaching from opposite directions via a motion-gated, bidirectional logic and broadcasting real-time warnings of potential collision risks. Field validation demonstrated a reliable link at a 150 m target distance (RSSI of-91.3 dBm) and robust operation at extended ranges with a negative SNR of-3 dB. Furthermore, an IMU-based Vector-Track algorithm effectively distinguishes between safe and converging trajectories. Offering a 10× cost advantage over radar, estimated at Rs 3500 ($39) per roadside unit and Rs 1000 ($12) per vehicle unit. BTAAS provides a validated, scalable technology for accident prevention in high-risk regions.
