Abstract

The evolution of 5G has enabled highly accurate and low-latency positioning services, fostering applications across critical sectors such as autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and logistics. However, while 5G standardization efforts have focused extensively on accuracy, reliability, and integrity, the security aspects of its positioning technologies remain underexplored. This article aims to raise awareness of potential threats to 5G positioning systems by highlighting vulnerabilities within its architectures and localization procedures. We examine attack vectors originating from both malicious network entities and external adversaries, detailing their potential to compromise localization accuracy. Through an experimental implementation of a spoofing attack on positioning reference signal using commercial devices, we demonstrate how such threats can lead to significant deviations in localization. Finally, we discuss recent advancements in 3GPP standards addressing positioning integrity and explore emerging research directions for countermeasures to enhance the resilience and security of 5G location services.
