Media Over QUIC and WebRTC Interoperability: an Engineering Approach
Abstract
We present the first practical demonstration of interoperability between WebRTC and Media over QUIC (MoQ). We extended the opensource Janus WebRTC Media Server to bridge these two protocols. Our work combines the ultra-low-latency capabilities of WebRTC with the scalable streaming paradigm of MoQ. We detail the architectural design and implementation choices that enable Janus to act as a gateway between WebRTC and MoQ endpoints. The gateway translates media and signaling between the two protocols. This integration allows realtime applications to benefit from MoQ's efficient delivery mechanisms while preserving WebRTC's responsiveness and reliability. Experimental results confirm that our approach supports both interactive and large-scale streaming scenarios. This paves the way for next-generation media applications leveraging both protocols.
