Abstract

Modern mobile front-end systems increasingly rely on multimode multiband power amplifier modules (PAMs) to support diverse frequency bands and stringent 3GPP linearity and efficiency requirements. Although PAMs are fully-matched and packaged, the overall system performance still critically depends on the external output matching network (OMNPAM). In real product deployment, impedance fine-tuning through OMNPAMremains indispensable to minimize current consumption while preserving linearity compliance across multiple communication bands. However, this practical optimization scenario is often overlooked, and the tuning burden typically falls on application engineers rather than PAM designers. This article presents a practical workflow to apply load-pull data at the PAM level rather than at the device level for system-level performance optimization. Using representative commercial PAMs, we show how optimized OMNPAMdesign can ensure the lowest current consumption while maintaining 3GPP-compliant linearity for all target bands. The methodology and insights provided serve as a practical reference for application engineers to efficiently tune and validate PAM-based transmitter systems.
