Future-Ready Metro Power System: Low Carbon and Affordable
Abstract
Conventional metro traction power systems (TPSs) based on diode rectifiers have been used for decades but face two significant challenges in the future. First, achieving carbon neutrality goals by 2050 or 2060 has made reducing carbon emissions a critical issue; however, current systems fail to exploit their energy-saving potential by fully utilizing regenerative braking energy. Second, with the rapid expansion of urban rail transit, the increasing power demand of metro systems places growing reliance on robust yet expensive ac urban power sources, escalating the construction costs of urban grids and rendering some engineering projects unaffordable.
