Abstract

For multimachine power system, maintaining stability is an important challenge brought by intermittency in renewable sources integration. This work presents an efficient damping torque implementation by hydro governors to improve stability of power system. The perturbation taken here is step and discrete integration of solar & wind sources. Solar increased by 0.3 pu and wind increased by 0.5 pu step raised and the settling time decreased by 75 %. The case study consists up of two areas four machine system with four hydro governors and 39-bus system with multiple hydro governors imparting simultaneously damping torque to oscillations brought by solar and wind source penetrations. To optimize the governor gains, a multi objective sand-cat swarm optimization (SCO) has been implemented. The SCO is less complex and more efficient because it employs only pre optimizing parameter. The SSO has been contrasted with PSO and DE algorithms. The case studies reveal that, the hydro governor can be employed efficiently to handle oscillation in power system for stability improvement, if their gains are tuned efficiently like SCO algorithm.
