Reconfigurable Non-Isolated DC-DC Converter for DC Microgrid Applications
Abstract
This paper presents a proof of concept of a reconfigurable non-isolated DC-DC converter for connecting different energy sources and loads in a DC microgrid. Reconfigurable converters enhance redundancy, ease maintenance, and allow plug-and-play capability for converters for different power sources in DC microgrids. The proposed reconfigurable converter can operate as a unidirectional boost or buck converter or as a bidirectional converter. The proposed architectures offer the DC microgrid outstanding flexibility and can handle a variety of power flow circumstances effectively. Its bidirectional capacity enables a balanced and robust microgrid operation by facilitating energy exchange between battery storage systems and distributed loads. Simulation and experimental work confirm the effectiveness of the proposed converter in terms of dynamic response and justify the proof of concept of plug-and-play capability of the reconfigurable converter in the DC microgrid. This research highlights the converter's ability to meet the growing energy storage needs, renewable energy integration, and smart grid features, paving the way for scalable and environmentally friendly DC microgrid systems.
