Abstract

Motorsport-focused cars rely on standalone engine control units that are often not compatible with the stock instrument cluster and diagnostic system. This limits access to important vehicle information and diagnostic analysis without expensive proprietary solutions. This paper introduces a low-cost software-defined instrument cluster aiming to replace the standard units for enhanced real-time display, diagnostic analysis, logging, and telemetric support. Modular software design supports deterministic analysis without modifying the firmware of the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Signal and limit flag analysis are done on the application layer to provide more in-depth analysis beyond stock capabilities. Has been successfully integrated into a vehicle with a standalone ECU to provide a stable and compatible real-time system that works in conjunction with external telemetric analysis software such as Grafana.
