Abstract

A novel planar pulsed microundulator with a 5-mm period for application in a subterahertz free-electron laser (FEL) has been developed and tested. The undulator provides up to a 1.4-T transverse magnetic field (rms undulator parameter of up to 0.46) for a 20 mm wide, 500-kV high-current relativistic sheet electron beam. A two-layer design is proposed, with a copper layer providing electrical conductivity and a stainless-steel layer ensuring mechanical robustness. To provide smooth uptapering of the undulator field at the undulator entrance, wedge-shaped copper plates are introduced. Magnetic field measurements on a scaled model demonstrated excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, and experimental tests of a full-scale prototype confirmed the feasibility of the design.
