Characterization and Reduction of Transformer’s High-Frequency Common-Mode Electromagnetic Interference in Isolated Power Converters
Abstract
The transformer parasitic capacitance balancing technique has been employed in isolated power converters to suppress common mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI). However, this article demonstrates that at high frequencies, its effectiveness diminishes due to parasitic resonance along CM EMI current flowing paths within transformers. This article explores the distribution of CM EMI currents within transformer windings and analyzes the resulting magnetic field distributions. A transformer bifilar winding structure is introduced to suppress CM EMI. Finally, the proposed winding design techniques for CM EMI reduction are experimentally validated.
