Abstract

We present the first demonstration of an acoustic quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) circuit based on polarization switching of ferroelectric thin films. Electric field control of piezoelectric coefficient in mechanically coupled ferroelectric transducers allows for digital modulation of microwave frequency signal. A proof-of-concept prototype based on barium strontium titanate (BST) bulk acoustic wave devices was fabricated. Quadrature phase shift keying modulation and 8 QAM are performed at 1.66 GHz with a modulation speed of 2 MBd. The spectrum of the modulated signal is presented. The prototype is inherently process compatible with acoustic wave devices, enabling all-acoustic signal processing.
