Abstract

High-voltage ultrashort pulse generators are critical for advancing particle accelerators, yet conventional systems face inherent limitations in prepulse suppression, pulse compression, and waveform fidelity. This paper introduces a synergistic SOS-GNLTL (Semiconductor Opening Switch–Gyromagnetic Nonlinear Transmission Line) system that uses a tunable axial bias field to dynamically modulate the nonlinear permeability of the GNLTL. Experimental results demonstrate outstanding performance: a normalized prepulse amplitude below 1%, a rise time of 1.66 ns, and a 24.2 kV output on a 50 Ω load with a 3.32 ns FWHM. The system's performance is shown to be highly tunable, with the 220 mm GNLTL configuration achieving a 1.03 ns rise time, however, at the cost of introducing 3.7% rising-edge ringing and increased pulse attenuation. Moreover, optimal prepulse suppression requires precise axial field tuning, with deviations degrading both waveform purity and amplitude. By functioning simultaneously as a prepulse suppressor and a rising-edge sharpener, the GNLTL enables exceptional waveform control. This work presents the first demonstrated use of a GNLTL for prepulse suppression, offering an integrated, robust solution for high-energy systems that demand nanosecond-scale precision and high waveform purity.
