Abstract

There are numerous methodologies for addressing the modeling of power electronics converters (PEC) nowadays. Each of these approaches is closely related to the topology of the PEC as well as the intended application, and thus, developing a model for offline execution differs significantly from simulating one in real-time (RT). To date, extensive research and significant advancements have been made in this field, resulting in the development of PEC models that are increasingly accurate, even for RT simulation. However, there are currently no established guidelines to follow regarding the modeling procedure of PEC based on their application and topology. This paper aims to serve as a review of the current state-of-the-art in PEC modeling, compiling the most relevant works and techniques, and proposing a defined workflow for choosing an optimal modeling approach depending on the applications and requirements of the models. Moreover, it is also enhanced the importance of a good election of the computational platform where the simulation of the model will be conducted in order to establish a bidirectional relation between the simulation platform and the modeling approach and its solving method.
