Abstract

Conductor galloping threatens the safe operation of overhead transmission lines. This paper proposes an online monitoring method for galloping through the induced current or voltage in the ground wires, which is based on the periodic variation of mutual inductance between conductors and ground wires. The monitoring device of this method is convenient to install and maintain, and the monitoring effect is not influenced by bad weather such as fog and snow. In order to detect galloping information, a calculation model for the induced signals in the ground wires during galloping is firstly studied. Then the dynamic response of induced signals in the ground wires under different galloping conditions is analyzed. An inverse deduction method for galloping characteristics is then proposed based on the frequency features of the induced signals in the ground wires. A scaled test is conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The accuracy of deduced results is acceptable and the study offers new possibilities for overhead transmission line condition monitoring.
