Abstract

This image is an illustrative rendering of a 3D model of a bat (Myotis daubentonii) created using 3D photogrammetry. It shows that we can ‘freeze’ the pose of a live animal; turning it into a mesh model that we can then use for numerical simulations. The 3D model is an embodiment of our new method that combines 3D photogrammetry and numerical modelling to accurately estimate the directional hearing in animals. It is a leap forward in understanding hearing directionality because it is easily accessible and because it for the first time allows us to perform the measurement directly on live animals.
