Abstract

Hinrichsen, R. A. (2025). Solving three core challenges in transient dynamics analysis of matrix population models. Methods in Ecology and Evolution, 16, 2517–2530. https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.70139. In paragraph 5 of the ‘Introduction’ section, the text ‘Balancing produces scale-independent indices of transient dynamics that remain unchanged across rescaled stage counts (e.g. pre- vs. post-reproductive census)’ was incorrect. This should have read: ‘Balancing produces scale-independent indices of transient dynamics that remain unchanged across rescaled stage counts (e.g. pre- vs. post-reproductive census types in Leslie matrix models)’. In paragraph 2 of the ‘2.3.3 Scale dependence’ section, the text ‘To avoid such error one uses scale-invariant indices of transient dynamics, which are constructed by balancing the PPMs’ was incorrect. This should have read: ‘To avoid such error, one uses scale-invariant indices of transient dynamics, which are constructed by balancing the PPMs when different census types correspond to rescalings of stage counts, as in Leslie matrix models’. This correction is needed because, in general, a change in census type does not result in a simple rescaling of stage counts. We apologise for this error.
