Campos de altitude from Brazil: Neglected biodiversity treasures under threat
Abstract
F I G U R E 1 Main high-altitude grasslands of the Atlantic Forest (campos de altitude).Typically, in southeastern Brazil, these grasslands occur above approximately 1800-2000 m (Safford, 1999a, 1999b).However, this elevational threshold varies with oceanic influence and latitude, beginning around 1500 m in some regions (Vasconcelos, 2011), or even lower toward the south. The image at the bottom right corresponds to a photo taken in Itatiaia National Park, on the border of Brazil's most populous states: Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro.
