Abstract

Cover Photograph: This color-adjusted micrograph shows the surface of a titanium tantalum silicon carbide MAX-phase, a new solid solution that was synthesized using a high-temperature pressureless vacuum sintering process. MAX-phases are of interest because of their unique combination of both ceramic and metal properties, which is due to the inclusion of both ionic and covalent bonds.
