Abstract

Society selectively privileges certain groups, which creates separate yet unequal social and political systems and macro systems. This results in distinct health experiences linked to health disparities.A key aspect of health disparities is that the difference is measurable relative to a reference group that is not under-resourced.Health disparities lend themselves well to applying systems thinking to health policy. For example, the LGBTQ+ community is disproportionately affected by poor health outcomes and has historically lower rates of preventive care use. There is limited clinical and policy guidance available to standardize affirming, medically appropriate care, especially regarding breast and chest care for LGBTQ+ patients. Therefore, it is imperative to create a policy that integrates a complexity-driven approach and context in its creation and implementation.
