Abstract

ABSTRACT Hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S) is a gaseous signalling molecule that plays an active role in plant growth and stress responses. In this review, we summarise the synthesis and metabolism of H 2 S, recent progress in H 2 S research on stress and plant growth, and discuss the modes of action of H 2 S. Many studies have demonstrated that H 2 S exhibits a hormetic effect, that suitable concentrations of H 2 S actively regulate the development of various species through a conserved mechanism. H 2 S affects multiple growth stages of plants and alleviates oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and homoeostasis abnormalities in stress responses, primarily through transcriptional and post‐translational regulation. In addition, we present unresolved problems and the H 2 S applicational significance.
