Characterisation and Testing of Coatings
Abstract
The characterisation and testing of coatings are essential to ensuring their performance, durability, and suitability for diverse industrial applications. Thermal Spray Coatings are widely applied to enhance surface properties such as wear resistance, corrosion protection, thermal insulation, and aesthetic quality. This work outlines a comprehensive approach to evaluating coatings through both fundamental characterisation and performance-based testing. Fundamental characterisation involves non-destructive techniques like optical microscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD, nanoindentation, and surface profilometry to examine microstructure, composition, hardness, porosity, and adhesion. These techniques help in understanding the intrinsic properties of coatings and their influence on service behaviour. On the other hand, destructive performance tests such as wear, corrosion, thermal cycling, and fatigue testing simulate real-world operational conditions to assess coating reliability and failure mechanisms. The integration of these methods enables a complete evaluation of coatings, guiding the development and optimisation of surface engineering strategies. Advancements in non-destructive testing and real-time monitoring further enhance evaluation capabilities. Overall, a combined approach to characterisation and testing ensures coatings meet performance expectations and extend the service life of components in challenging environments.
