Abstract

High-performance polymer composites (HPPCs) have emerged as transformative materials in the construction industry, offering superior strength-to-weight ratios, corrosion resistance, and durability compared to traditional materials like steel and concrete, where additive manufacturing plays a major role in the development of substrates. This chapter explains the latest advancements in HPPCs for structural applications, focusing on their composition, manufacturing processes, and performance characteristics. The authors explore key polymer matrices, such as epoxies, polyesters, and vinyl esters, reinforced with fibers like carbon, glass, and aramid, highlighting their mechanical properties, thermal stability, and environmental resistance. The chapter also examines their applications in bridges, buildings, and retrofitting, emphasizing benefits like reduced maintenance costs and enhanced design flexibility. Challenges, including high initial costs, limited long-term performance data, and recycling difficulties, are critically assessed. Recent innovations, such as nanotechnology integration and sustainable bio-based composites, are discussed as future directions.
