Abstract

Core-level photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies, utilizing the energy tunability of synchrotron radiation as the excitation source, have been used to probe the presence of oxygen and carbon on the surface of δ-plutonium. Strong connections to an earlier work based upon MgKα x-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and electron-stimulated, differential Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) have been demonstrated. The enhanced sensitivity of the O1s and C1s photoelectron emission peaks near hv = 850 eV is illustrated extensively. A digital process for converting the synchrotron-radiation-based data into differential Auger spectra is introduced and calibrated by comparison with extant AES results.
