Co-packaging of organic photodetector with microLED matrix for multifunctional display bio-application
Abstract
MicroLED displays utilize minimal pixel area due to their powerful light source, allowing space for embedded sensors and thus enabling multifunctional and interactive displays. This technology could be a key enabler for future adaptive and personalized displays. Recent advancements show growing interest in bio-applications using organic light sources. However, this paper focuses on MicroLED for its outstanding radiance capability. We present the development of MicroLED array technology co-packaged with tailored Organic Photodetector (OPD). Both devices are designed to sense green wavelengths, relevant for photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal extraction. An electronic board is designed to perform end-to-end characterization from the light source driver through the Device Under Test (DUT) — an optical phantom mimicking biological tissue properties — to the photodetector and its TIA strategy. Extensive experiments involving MicroLED driving, OPD biasing, and DUT characteristics predict the expected signal level for the final bioapplication.
