Digital art holograms: exploring concepts in a dynamic space
Abstract
The new materials and processes introduced into art since the mid-20th century have defined the dominant trends in what we now consider 'Art and New Media', which includes video art, video installation, holography, digital art, virtual reality, and other interactive forms. The production and printing of digital holograms comes from such artistic areas, after being mixed, electronically manipulated and digitally synthesized, offering visual effects and additional important resources for the artistic creation of images. Considering that a hologram is the memory of a moment that was registered in the holographic plate, for several years I’m making artworks in the studio creating image information for printing digital holograms. The topics I have developed have focused on visual aspects such as light and colour, third and fourth dimensions, the space-time relationship, and representation issues; in order to explore concepts such as memory and identity, materiality and immateriality; gender issues; thought and action. To create that kind of images, we prepared the studio and setup for the visual information, studying the construction of the image for each hologram, having in mind that in the end the observer will see 3D images in a dynamic space, more exactly 4D images. There are several considerations we must take into account, but it is the mastery of all factors and their relationship with the artistic concepts that determines the final work of art, so in this paper, the creative process, experimental methods and techniques of digital holographic images are analysed from the point of view of visual arts.
