Abstract

Extended reality displays blend virtual imagery with the real-world environment, enabling immersive user experiences across a wide range of emerging applications. However, the realism of these mixed scenes is often constrained by limitations such as unnatural depth cues in virtual images, a lack of optical interaction between virtual content and the real world, and insufficient display panel resolution. In this talk, we present our recent work addressing these challenges. We introduce light field three-dimensional display techniques to present natural depth cues and explore occlusion-capable optical see-through displays that render opaque virtual objects capable of masking the real background—and even casting realistic shadows onto it. Finally, we show our recent foveated display techniques that enhance perceived resolution without requiring higher-resolution panels by dynamically reconfiguring the pixel grid.
